Liverpool’s task of qualifying for the Champions League knockout stages has been made a lot more challenging following Tuesday night’s shock 2-0 defeat away at Red Star Belgrade. This was Red Star’s first win in Europe’s premier club cup competition since 1992.Liverpool beat the same team 4-0 at Anfield a fortnight ago, but produced one of their worst performances under Jurgen Klopp at the Stadion Rajko Mitić and were deservedly beaten. Two goals in seven first-half minutes from Milan Pavkov earned all three points for the hosts, whose vocal fans did their utmost to create an intimidating atmosphere inside the stadium.Klopp used all three substitutions in the second half but his players couldn’t find a way back into the match. With Paris Saint-Germain and Napoli left to play, Liverpool will need to produce significantly improved performances in those fixtures to avoid crashing out of the competition next month.Liverpool fans on social media were particularly frustrated by the performances of Joel Matip and Adam Lallana, while Daniel Sturridge also came in for a lot of criticism. However, Liverpool fans also noticed a faux pas from James Miner before kick-off, which some of the more superstitious supporters among the Reds’ fan base believe may have been a mistake.Spanish referee Antonio Mateu Lahoz asked Milner whether he wanted to choose the red side of blue side of the coin. Now, as a Liverpool player, the natural and obvious choice would have been red.But nope. He went for blue. He lost the coin toss and Red Star’s captain was then given choice of ends.Watch the footage here…

Here’s how Liverpool fans reacted on Twitter…

Unsurprisingly, Milner cut a dejected figure in his post-match interview.

Asked where it went wrong on the night for Liverpool, the Reds’ vice-captain responded: “From the first whistle. We didn’t start well enough and that showed by them getting the two goals.

“I thought we did better second half. We had chances but we didn’t take them and you get punished.”

Next time you’re asked to pick red or blue, James, always go red.
