Mark Webber knows all about frustrating times in the Red Bull driver's seat.

The former driver had his fair share of bad luck at his time with the constructors and it didn't help that his teammate Sebastian Vettel was winning world titles in the other car.

The Australian has watched on as his countryman Daniel Ricciardo has battled major reliability issues in the second half of the season.

While it became increasingly likely that Ricciardo would leave Red Bull at the end of his contract this year, he surprised the Formula 1 fraternity at large by committing to Renault, who have supplied his engine and according to Red Bull team bosses, been a big factor behind his tale of his more recent woe.

Webber has raised some concerns over the move and hopes that it doesn't lead to Ricciardo becoming disillusioned with the sport.

“I think it’s quite obvious he can’t wait for the season to be over, which is a little bit of a concern," Webber said, per Planet F1.

"I don’t want him to fall out of love with the sport.

“I just think that really tests your mettle, he'll be questioning the sport in his head.

"There’s not too many people to put an arm around your shoulder. Only the tough survive and he knows that.”

Ricciardo started the season in impressive fashion winning two of the first six races and looming as a dark horse in the drivers' championship.

However, since his success in Monaco, Ricciardo has failed to finish in six of the 13 races and has not finished on the podium during that time.

The tipping point for his frustration was arguably the last race in Mexico when he started on pole position yet while comfortably in second a mechanical fault ended his race ten laps from the finish.

However, Webber said that Ricciardo cannot afford to let his head drop despite the sport being unforgiving at times.

He added: “He’s got to buckle up and keep going if he wants to bounce back with Renault next year.

"He’s made his bed over there with Renault, which I think is a weird decision, but that’s what he wants to do because he wants a change of environment.

"But it really can test how much he actually is enjoying the sport.”
