Cristiano Ronaldo will face his former club Manchester United once again on Wednesday night in the Champions League.
The Portuguese superstar spent six seasons at Old Trafford, winning three Premier League titles and scoring a ridiculous amount of goals.
But if it wasn’t for a certain Federico Macheda, Ronaldo may have missed out on his third and final league title during the 2008/09 campaign.
Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were being chased down by Liverpool in the title race and appeared to be opening the door for them when they trailed Aston Villa 2-1 at the Theatre of Dreams on April 5.
The Red Devils were desperate and Ferguson threw on 17-year-old Macheda in an attempt to get a result.
Cristiano Ronaldo equalised with 10 minutes remaining before Macheda scored an incredible winner in the third minute of injury-time.
United ultimately saw off Liverpool to claim the title with Macheda scoring another winner against Sunderland the following week.
The Italian never made the grade at the club but he’ll never forget the end of that 2008/09 season.
And the striker hasn’t forgotten Ronaldo’s gesture following his heroics against Aston Villa.
Cristiano won the Man of the Match that day and offered Macheda his bottle of champagne so he could remember that day for the rest of his life.
“I have so many memories,” Macheda told CalcioMercato, per The Sun.
"The most significant maybe it was the day of my debut with Manchester United.
"After the match, where I scored the goal of 3-2 and he had scored a double, he received a bottle as the man of the match.
"He wanted to give it to me, but I refused because I already had one.
"But it was a very nice gesture from an idol like him."
We’re not quite sure where Macheda had been given another Man of the Match bottle considering it was his debut, but it was still a class gesture from Ronaldo.
Although to be fair, Ronaldo was just trying to get rid of it because he already had so many of those bottles at home for his numerous Man of the Match displays down the years.
Macheda, now 27, is plying his trade in Greece for Panathinaikos while Cristiano is hoping to defeat his former club once again with Juventus.News Now - Sport News
