Arsenal reaching the last-32 of the Europa League has been overshadowed somewhat by Danny Welbeck's latest injury setback. The striker suffered a suspected broken ankle in the goalless draw after launching himself towards Stephan Lichtsteiner’s cross. The 27-year-old had to be given oxygen and stretchered off and there are now serious concerns about whether he'll be seen in an Arsenal shirt again, as he is already into the final year of his contract. If there was any doubt as to the severity of the injury, the faces of his team-mates said it all.Mattéo Guendouzi looked visibly shocked and to their credit, Sporting players also gathered round to see Welbeck off the pitch.Nani comforted his old team-mate and after the final whistle, took to Twitter to send him a further message:"Great fans, strong team spirit and important point in London. Get well soon my friend @DannyWelbeck."

“It was a very sad moment," Nani said afterwards, via the Independent.

“I feel very sorry for him, he is a great person. A good lad and a good friend. When that kind of moment happens in the game you feel very sad.

“I don't know what to say, I just want him to recover well and I hope it is nothing serious but you can see something happened there so I wish him all the best and a very fast recovery.”

Of course, nobody wishes such an injury on any player, but it is particularly devastating to see Welbeck suffer yet another knockback, having essentially been robbed of a year-and-a-half of his career already with a persistent knee problem.

Arsenal are depleted

The fact it happened on a day when he was called up to Gareth Southgate's England squad made it a particularly bitter pill to swallow.

“It's the worst news tonight, this injury. It's clear that we are with him in these minutes,” Emery added.

The Spaniard had made nine changes, with the likes of Emile Smith-Rowe being given an opportunity.

This ought to have been a chance for the Gunners boss to show off his squad's depth, but he will be left with serious concerns about his limited attacking options in the wake of Welbeck's injury.

Sporting went into the game with problems of their own, their ongoing off-field crisis worsening last week with the sacking of manager Jose Peseiro.

All in all, a difficult night at the Emirates and we can only wish for Welbeck's speedy recovery.
