Cristiano Ronaldo lost the respect of some Manchester United fans for his eyebrow-raising celebration after scoring against his former club on Wednesday night. The Portuguese superstar, who completed his remarkable transformation from inconsistent teenager to goalscoring machine during his six years at Old Trafford, netted a wonderful volley and then celebrating by lifting up his shift and showing off his abs.Ronaldo produced a muted celebration when he scored against United for Real Madrid at Old Trafford in 2013 but was in no mood to do the same this time around. The 33-year-old then further antagonised United fans with his post-match comments.“Manchester United did nothing to win the game,” Ronaldo said after his side’s 2-1 defeat. “You can’t even talk about luck, because you have to find your own luck and in this case we just gifted it to them.“Expect to hear fewer chants of “Viva Ronaldo” from the Old Trafford faithful from now on.Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was analysing the game for beIN Sports and spoke the truth about Ronaldo showing off his abs after scoring.“We have seen so many games and we’re still surprised because he does the unexpected,” the veteran French coach commented.

“He shows his abdomens after - but he didn’t score because of his abdomens, he scored because of his skill and his speed of decisions.”

Well said, Arsene. Ronaldo’s abs had nothing to do with that particular goal, no matter what Juve’s No. 7 might want to believe.

It was all down to his technical qualities and decision making.

Wenger also believes that Ronaldo would have been “absolutely gutted” that his wondergoal wasn’t the main talking point after the final whistle.

“He will go home, believe me, absolutely gutted because a goal like that will not be highlighted because they lost the game,” he added. “This goal with a 1-0 victory will have been all over the world.”

Again, it’s fair to say that Wenger is absolutely right here. Knowing Ronaldo, he will have been devastated that his goal and celebration counted for very little after United turned the game on its head.

While the majority of United fans presumably still love Ronaldo for everything he did for their club, there are some supporters whose opinion of their former winger has been tarnished slightly following Wednesday night’s match in Turin.
