Hammers’ spirit and quality will see us through

Another loss and still bottom of the table. But, do West Ham really look like a team who will struggle for the whole season?

With Wolves beating Manchester City 2-1, it means the Hammers are becoming more and more isolated at the bottom. After seeing the passion and drive in the team on Saturday against Arsenal though, there is reason for optimism.

The team contains quality, with Frederic Piquionne, Robert Green, Mark Noble, Scott Parker, Lars Jacobsen and Matthew Upson to name but a few examples. In Saturday’s defeat, the Hammers held off Arsenal extremely well, defensively stepping up against a strong Gunners outfit for 88 minutes.

Arsenal dominated slightly, but I think Robert Green’s performance deserves a mention. He had a spectacular match and once again proved all of his critics wrong – very wrong.

If we continue with displays such as this, the points will soon pick up and we will slowly climb up the table. Optimistic I know but honestly, is there really any room for negativity after Saturday’s game?

West Ham are a club who receive much criticism in the media, but are also known for a strong history. The academy is recognised worldwide for being one of the best in the country and creating many internationals.

At the minute, the club boasts several internationals, namely Robert Green, Matthew Upson (both England), Tal Ben-Haim (Israel), Winston Reid (New Zealand), Manuel Da Costa (Portugal U-23), Herita Ilunga (Congo), Lars Jacobsen (Denmark), Valon Behrami (Switzerland), Victor Obinna (Nigeria), and Jonathon Spector (USA).

It’s in our nature to struggle for survival, but we often finish in the top half, proving everyone wrong. There has been little mention of relegation so far, even though we’re sitting there on the bottom.

Despite this, I get the feeling we are in for one exciting season, full of ups and downs. Then again, who wants a mid-season finish every year? With sheer determination, we showed that we are not going to be relegated anytime soon and we will fight with every last game.
