Anthony Martial can join illustrious list of Man United players by scoring against Man City

West Ham United v Manchester United - Premier League

We’re starting to see the best of Anthony Martial at Manchester United.

The 22-year-old has scored five goals in his past six matches and is getting an extended run in the first team.

It hasn’t always been easy for Martial under Jose Mourinho. He wasn’t a regular in the starting line-up last season.

Then, in the summer, he was criticised by Mourinho for failing to return to Man United’s pre-season tour following the birth of his second child.

But Martial worked hard and he hasn’t looked back since scoring in the 3-2 win against Newcastle United in October.

The Frenchman will need to be at his best if the Red Devils are to beat rivals Manchester City in the first derby of the season on Sunday.

But he will be spurred on by the opportunity to join an illustrious list of players by scoring against the reigning Premier League champions.

Martial can join illustrious list v Man City

Martial has scored in each of his last four league matches. If he finds the back of the net against Man City, he will become only the seventh different player to score in five or more matches in a row for the Red Devils in the Premier League.

The list of players to have achieved that for the club is really impressive.

Eric Cantona was the first player to do so. Dwight Yorke followed him in the late 90s.

Ruud van Nistelrooy did it on four separate occasions, while Wayne Rooney also managed to score five league goals in a row.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Robin van Persie also managed to do so during their Old Trafford careers.

Martial’s run started when he scored United’s second goal in a 3-2 comeback win against Newcastle.

He then scored a brace against Chelsea and found the target in a 2-1 win against Everton one week later.

And it was Martial’s goal that levelled the scores last week against Bournemouth, a match which the Red Devils went on to win 2-1.

He’s red hot at the moment, and City will need to watch out.
