For the past decade, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have dominated the Ballon d’Or.

Back in 2008, Kaka picked up the accolade but, since then, Messi and Ronaldo have shared it five times each.

But is this the end of the duopoly?

We’ve seen signs that their domination is coming to an end, especially when Luka Modric picked up FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award in September.

But will Messi or Ronaldo win a sixth Ballon d’Or in December?

Well, it’s certainly not looking that way.

That’s because, according to French radio journalist Eric Mamruth, the two superstars aren’t even in the top three right now.

Mamruth’s ‘Exclusive’ suggests that Modric leads the way after half of the votes have been counted.

But it’s not Messi and Ronaldo sharing the podium with the Croatian.

Instead, Raphael Varane is in second and his French teammate Kylian Mbappe is in third.

Although only half of the votes have been counted, those results are pretty surprising, to say the least.

The absence of Messi and Ronaldo on the podium would certainly be a massive shock.

But after they both crashed out of the World Cup at the last-16 stage, there’s a belief that neither actually deserve to win the award for a sixth time.

Instead, many people - like Thierry Henry - believe the winner should be a Frenchman.

"I think it would be a shame if a French player does not win the Ballon d'Or, apart from Eden Hazard because he was extraordinary at every Wold Cup match - defensively and on the counter-attack,” Henry said.

"But logically, a French player should win. Why not Varane? He won the Champions League, he was very strong.

"There is the alien (extra-terrestrial) Kylian Mbappe, and also Antoine Griezmann. But I can also mention many players."
