It was thought that Higuain must have said something offensive to the official to receive his marching orders.

However, Italian journalist Tancerdi Palmeri insists the former Juve and Napoli striker simply kept repeating “fischi sempre a me", which translates to "you always whistle on me".

Palmeri states the red card was brandished due to Higuain's 'head gesture' towards the official.

Higuain said himself after the game that he said nothing offensive to the referee.

“It seemed like an unfair foul, in my opinion I was fouled,” Higuain told Milan TV, per Football Italia.

“I was booked, the referee knows what I said and I didn’t insult anyone. I apologise to the club, the fans, the Coach and my teammates because these things must be avoided.

“We’re people, we have emotions, the match wasn’t going the right way and that’s how it ended.

“My ban? The referee knows what I said, I didn’t say anything offensive.”

Higuain is likely to receive a two-game ban for his actions, which will see him miss games against Lazio and Parma.
