It was a very long time ago that Ajax were the best side in Europe, winning three consecutive European Cups from 1970/71 through to 1972/73.

And it was 23 years ago that they last won the Champions League, winning the 1994/95 final against AC Milan.

While Ajax are a long way from emulating those incredible sides, they do currently boast a rather promising squad right now.

The Dutch side are set to qualify from their Champions League group this season consisting of Bayern Munich, Benfica and AEK and are in a title race with PSV in the Eredivisie.

There is so much interest in this Ajax side because of the incredible young talent they currently have in their ranks.

The two most exciting prospects are without doubt defender Matthijs de Ligt and midfielder Frenkie de Jong.

Both have been linked with a big-money move to European giants and surely won’t be at Ajax for too much longer.

One club that has been linked with a move for the duo are Barcelona.

And if De Ligt’s and De Jong’s recent comments are anything to go by, they will be interested in the move.

The two wonderkids were asked who is better: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo?

And they didn’t even need to think about the answer.

De Ligt picked Messi and said: “It really doesn't need any explanation.”

Meanwhile, De Jong insisted: “Messi is way better than Ronaldo.”

Real Madrid v Barcelona - La Liga

Usually, people consider the Messi or Ronaldo debate to be a bit closer than that…

However, it doesn’t look like either Messi or Ronaldo will be winning their sixth Ballon d’Or next month.

After Luka Modric beat the pair to FIFA’s ‘The Best’ award in September, the Croatian is highly expected to be walking away with the Ballon d’Or in December.
