Samir Nasri's return to the Premier League now looks to be hanging in the balance.

The former French international has been out of football for the past 18 months after receiving a ban for an intravenous drip treatment he received at a 'Drip Doctors' clinic in the USA.

By that time, he had already been released by Turkish side Antalyaspor, having made just eight appearances.

It was an embarrassingly public saga and one from which many doubted whether the 31-year-old would bounce back.

Nasri, of course, was a highly successful winger back in his day, first with Arsenal and latterly with Manchester City, where he won four trophies.

Amid rumoured interest from Everton, it was West Ham - specifically, his old boss Manuel Pellegrini - who made the first move to help him resurrect his career.

The Hammers have won just three league games under the Chilean, so it is little surprise that they are willing to take a punt.

The deal is off

However, it now seems that Nasri's move could be on the verge of collapse, though the reasons why are being disputed.

First, the Mail claimed the Hammers were deterred by the midfielder's extortionate wage demands of £95,000-per-week, money he believes he could easily earn if he heads to an unnamed Chinese Super League club, who have also been hovering.

The Mirror have since clarified that it is his fitness, or lack thereof, which has put West Ham off. While it was initially thought he was two months away from being match fit, he's actually so out of shape he won't even be ready by the New Year.

Nasri could still, in theory, train wth the club until January and they would make a decision on his physical condition at a later date. His ban ends on December 31.

They are reluctant, however, because three of their highest earners, Andy Carroll, Jack Wilshere and Andrew Yarmalenko, are already on the sidelines.

It's hard to see where Nasri goes from here.
