Liverpool centre-back Dejan Lovren is his own biggest fan.

The Croatian insists that he’s among the best defenders in the world, even if that opinion isn’t shared by many others.

"I think people should recognise that I’m also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense,” Lovren said during the World Cup.

Lovren considers himself to be in the class that also includes Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

But, in a recent interview with Copa90, the Liverpool defender suggested that Ramos is made to look better by his teammates at the Bernabeu.

“If you look, Ramos has many more mistakes than me,” he said. “But he plays for Real Madrid, when you do a mistake you win 5-1 or 5-2, nobody cares.”

Lovren went on to say that Ramos’ teammate Raphael Varane is a better player than the Spaniard.

Ramos responds to Lovren's comments

His comments quickly made the headlines and we’ve had to wait until now for a response.

Ramos refused to retaliate, suggesting he has no desire to indulge anyone whose wish is to make headlines.

“I've said it many times. I don't know if these things are said out of frustration or for other reasons," the World Cup winner said, per FourFourTwo.

"I'm not going to answer Lovren or whoever wants to win three front pages or start the news bulletin. Everyone wins things for himself on the pitch."

Fair play, Sergio. Many others would have taken the bait.

It’s clear that he isn’t concerned by what Lovren has to say about him and he’s done the right thing by not issuing a direct response.

The 32-year-old is probably going to let his resume speak for itself.

The Spain international has won everything there is to win in football, including four Champions League titles, the World Cup and two European Championships.

Regardless of what Lovren thinks, he will go down as one of the best defenders in the history of the game.
