Benjamin Mendy has not had the best luck with injuries since joining Manchester City last season.

The French left-back missed the vast majority of last campaign after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee just a month into the 2017/18 season.

That kept him out for the best part of seven months, eventually returning to first team action in April.

His prolonged period on the sidelines meant he featured just eight times for his club in his debut season in England.

The 24-year-old has already surpassed that number this season, having impressed in the 10 games he has featured in.

However, Mendy now faces another period on the sidelines after having to undergo surgery on his left knee.

Manchester City confirmed the news late on Wednesday evening.

"The Frenchman, who played the full 90 minutes in the weekend’s 3-1 win over rivals Manchester United, travelled to join up with his national team before withdrawing from the squad," their website reads.

"The 24-year-old defender attended Dr. Cugat’s clinic in Barcelona where scans revealed that surgery was required.

"That surgery was conducted on Wednesday evening and everyone at Manchester City wishes Benjamin a speedy recovery."

Fortunately, according to Simon Stone of the BBC, it appears that it is not another ACL injury meaning Mendy's time on the sidelines is likely not going to be as long as last season.

Nevertheless, it's still a blow to Mendy and Manchester City with the Frenchman being in such good form to start the season.

It is unknown how long he will be out of action for at this time.

But how is Mendy feeling? In typical fashion, it seems he is handling the setback in good spirits.

The former Monaco defender is one of the funniest footballers on social media and he took to Instagram to address the injury.

And the two posts he sent were just brilliant.

In the first post he sent, Mendy made reference to the knee injury he suffered last year while also sending a message to those that have them in their Fantasy football team.

He wrote: "Other knee was jealous but the operation went well and its all good now 😘 be back soon guys u just have to find another FPL captain for some games 😝✌🏾"

And then he could not resist making another joke in his second post.

Never change, Benjamin.
