Vince McMahon wanted to end AJ Styles' 371-day reign as WWE champion due to Brock Lesnar

It seems the WWE love to change things up around Survivor Series.

Just last year, Charlotte Flair and AJ Styles won world titles en route to the last of the WWE's big annual four that completely changed some of the top matches on the card.

This year, this week's RAW and SmackDown drastically changed the 2018 card, too.

Becky Lynch was all set to face Ronda Rousey in a champion versus champion match on Sunday and many believed that match was set to close the show.

However, after Lynch suffered a 'broken face and concussion' according to the WWE, the Irish Lass Kicker has been pulled from the match and Charlotte will now take her place.

This is, of course, not planned at all. But, it did cause for WWE to change some of their other plans.

As we noted yesterday, Daniel Bryan had been lobbying to turn heel for a couple of weeks now as his comeback steam had started to wear off.

Dave Meltzer has suggested that sometime over the weekend - obviously before Becky Lynch was seriously injured - McMahon decided that he didn't want AJ Styles vs. Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series again.

Vince's answer to that was to end Styles 371-day WWE title run and put the title on Bryan to set up a first-time ever clash against Lesnar.

It's unclear why Vince pulled the trigger on the heel turn so quickly and out of the blue, but Meltzer speculated it could be something as simple as the injury to Lynch and the need for a new marquee match.

Meltzer did also say after Saudi Arabia that it was unlikely that the WWE would have big plans for Bryan moving forward, so take some things with a pinch of salt.

The whole Styles/Paul Heyman promo and mention of Bryan felt very forced and from that segment on, you could telegraph the title change. While McMahon might think this has shock factor, where the WWE plans to take this storyline from here is anyone's guess.

If Bryan is in for a squash to protect Lesnar too, that's not the greatest way to start a new title reign.
