Due to Roman Reigns taking time off from the WWE to battle leukaemia, the company had to accelerate their plans to turn Dean Ambrose heel.

On the same night which Reigns announced his leukaemia diagnosis, and as well as winning the Raw Tag Team Championship, Ambrose attacked Seth Rollins, turning heel in the process.

The Lunatic Fringe is now set to be in a lengthy storyline with The Kingslayer, potentially over the Intercontinental Championship. It's a feud that could last until WrestleMania 35 next year as well.

Ambrose is expected to be involved in the outcome of Rollins' match with United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura this weekend at Survivor Series too, which should accelerate their feud further too.

However, this wasn't supposed to be the way which The Lunatic Fringe turned heel, according to reports. In fact, he wasn't supposed to turn heel against Rollins. It was supposed to be another superstar instead.

According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, via Still Real To Us, Ambrose’s heel turn was originally supposed to happen much later, and he was supposed to turn on Reigns.

The Lunatic Fringe was then likely to go on to face The Big Dog at WrestleMania 35 in 2019, but due to the latter's battle with leukaemia, those plans were canceled.

Since Reigns was Universal Champion before relinquishing the title to battle against cancer, there's a good chance that this match at the Grandest Stage of them All would have been a Universal title match as well.

Dean Ambrose was supposed to turn heel on Roman Reigns

Although WWE fans are still likely going to be treated to Ambrose vs Rollins at WrestleMania next year, Ambrose vs Reigns, or possibly a triple threat between all members of The Shield would have been an awesome sight to see.

Obviously, however, the health of all WWE superstars must come first, so now fans will just be keeping their fingers crossed that The Big Dog is able to return to the ring soon so that we can see this Ambrose vs Reigns feud.
