Juventus may appear to be strolling towards an eighth successive Serie A title this season, but they aren’t exactly in a perfect situation right now.
While Massimiliano Allegri can enjoy the fact his men are six points clear of their nearest rivals Napoli with 12 matches played, he has a problem in midfield.
Juve will be without Sami Khedira, Federico Bernardeschi and Miralem Pjanic for the visit of SPAL next Saturday, leaving them somewhat short on options in the centre of the park.
Of course, Allegri can still call upon Blaise Matuidi, Rodrigo Bentancur and Emre Can in the absence of his preferred personnel.
However, addressing squad depth in the engine room has been a priority for the Old Lady since losing Paul Pogba to Manchester United two seasons ago.
The £90 million deal hasn’t been as fruitful as expected for the Frenchman, though, with he and Jose Mourinho clashing on several occasions throughout months gone by.
His uncertain situation at Old Trafford has tempted Juve to consider bringing him back to Turin, hopefully at a discounted price.
But, the Serie A giants, unwilling to run the risk of loosening their stranglehold on Italian football, are drawing up a list of fallback signings if Pogba remains a Red.
According to Tuttosport, via the Daily Mail, Juve want to go big.
The report claims: “Juventus are lining up several Premier League stars as they aim to bring in January reinforcements.
“Christian Eriksen and Paul Pogba have emerged as the Serie A champions' top targets, alongside Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Adrien Rabiot and Arsenal man Aaron Ramsey.”
Eriksen - whose Tottenham contract expires in 2020 - would be a viable alternative to the United man despite their contrasting playing styles.
The Dane isn’t producing the best of seasons at Wembley and has only four assists and a goal to his name.
Rather tellingly, the last of those came in a 3-1 victory over West Ham in the League Cup earlier this month when he delivered the corner preceding Spurs’ third.
Similarly, Rabiot could be vulnerable to persuasion having come close to leaving the Parc des Princes in the summer.
The 23-year-old remained in the French capital but his discipline has since come into question after turning up late to a team meeting ahead of the trip to Marseille last month.
The supposed reason for his absence and subsequent dropping from Thomas Tuchel’s starting line-up? He was watching El Clasico alongside Kylian Mbappe.
Ramsey - the final candidate named - has reportedly attracted serious interest from Bayern Munich, so it seems PSG wouldn’t have it all their own way if they did go after the Welshman.
