The Washington Redskins welcomed the Houston Texans to the capital yesterday, with a 6-3 record that saw them top of the NFC East. It's their first season since the 2011 campaign where they don't have Kirk Cousins in the Quarterback role, but they acquired Alex Smith to replace him.The number one pick in the 2005 NFL Draft, Smith joined the Redskins in January and signed a four-year, $94 million contract, which will take him to the age of 37.His 2017 season saw him post his best-ever regular season completed passes and passing yards for the Kansas City Chiefs, so it's no surprise why the Redskins wanted him.Jay Gruden's men were on the receiving end of a defeat though at the hands of the Texans yesterday though, going down narrowly by a score of 23-21, with Kai’mi Fairbairn hitting a game-winning 54-yard field goal that the Redskins couldn't recover from. But their loss paled into insignificance after what happened to Smith during the match.Seven minutes into the third quarter whilst on a third down, Smith got himself into trouble and was hounded down by Kareem Jackson and JJ Watt, and ended up being sacked. That wasn't the worst of it though, as footage showed his ankle flopping and clearly broken - you can watch that below, but viewing discretion is advised.

Gruden confirmed post-match that Smith broke both his tibia and fibula and would require immediate surgery.

The incident is eerily similar to a Redskins game 33 years to the day, where their former Quarterback-turned-sportscaster Joe Theismann suffered a career-ending injury to his ankle - and that match also finished 23-21.

Washington were on the winning side that time, but it's a horrific coincidence that it happened on exactly the same day.

Theismann was at the FedEx Field yesterday when Smith's untimely injury occurred and sent out some tweets

There were lots of well-wishers on social media following the incident, including from one of the men who sacked Smith at the time, JJ Watt.
