The whole of the motor racing world was left breathless following an unbelievable crash at the Macau Grand Prix this weekend.Seventeen-year-old Sophia Floersch was the main driver involved in the incident, and now will need to undergo spinal surgery, but it could quite easily have been a lot worse.Floersch, who is not 18 until next month, races in the FIA Formula 3 European Championship for Van Amersfoort Racing, in what is her debut season at this level. The horrifying incident was a brutal reminder of the dangers of high-speed racing.Floersch was racing towards a bend when she collided with Jehan Daruvala, who was in the process of braking for yellow warning flags. This knocked her off course and resulted in her hurtling into the corner, in reverse, at ridiculous speed. The young German was propelled into the air, to the extent where she flew over the fence and smashed into the wall of the photographer’s box.The sheer impact of the car hitting the box, shown on the video below, reflects how quickly Floersch was travelling and simply takes your breath away. The incident also affected fellow driver Sho Tsuboi, who proceeded to crash into the fence as she tried to negotiate the turn.

Immediately the race was suspended, with the officials aware of the severity of the crash.

Thankfully, the collision was not fatal for anyone involved with all parties expected to recover.

Floersch took to Twitter to confirm that she was okay and to thank everyone involved for their support.

"Just wanted to let everybody know that I am fine but will be going into surgery tomorrow morning,’ the teenager wrote. ‘Thanks to the @FIA and @hwaag-official @MercedesAMGF1 who are taking great care of me. Thanks to everybody for the supporting messages. Update soon."

Everyone will be hoping that the update will be of a successful surgery and a speedy recovery for the youngster, who will hopefully be seen back on the track in the not too distant future.
