The Ballon d’Or is a wide open competition this year.

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo have shared the award for the past 10 years but this time around, a new name is expected to be engraved on the prestigious award.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric is the bookmakers’ favourite. The 32-year-old has already been named The Best FIFA Men’s Player and UEFA Men’s Player of the Year.

But he faces stiff competition from a French contingency in his attempts to complete a hat-trick of accolades.

Antoine Griezmann, Raphael Varane and Kylian Mbappe all played a part in helping France win the World Cup in the summer.

Success in the biggest tournament in the world should count for something, right?

Edinson Cavani certainly thinks so.

Cavani doubts Modric's bid

The Paris Saint-Germain forward revealed who he believes should win the Ballon d’Or - and it’s bad news for Modric.

"For me, a Frenchman should win it,” Cavani said in an interview with former France international Christophe Dugarry, per AS.

“There are other players, but it should be a Frenchman; they've won big things. It should be one of those three [Mbappe, Griezmann or Varane].

“Modric? He had a great season, but Varane won the Champions League and the World Cup.

"Modric was a finalist [at Russia 2018] and had a great season, but Varane deserves it more."

Sorry, Luka.

Eden Hazard is backing Mbappe

Cavani isn’t the only player who doesn’t think Modric deserves the prize.

Chelsea’s Eden Hazard recently told RTFB that Mbappe should win it.

“I would have said Luka Modric but he has played a little less well since August and September,” Hazard said, per the Evening Standard.

“So, if we take into account the beginning of the season, I would say Kylian Mbappe.”

If Mbappe is to win the award, which will be announced on December 3, it would be the surest sign yet that the 19-year-old is the heir to Messi and Ronaldo’s throne.
