It’s more than five years now since Arsenal completed the signing of Mesut Ozil.

The German playmaker is well on his way to becoming a Gunners legend, winning three FA Cups and producing some quite breathtaking performances.

Ozil would have left having failed to reach legendary status had he walked at the end of last season, when his contract was due to expire.

But he put pen to paper on a new contract that runs until 2021, and Arsenal fans couldn’t have been happier.

He left Real Madrid after the club had paid £85 million to sign Gareth Bale from Tottenham Hotspur.

Los Blancos, who also signed Isco in the summer of 2013, claimed the decision to allow Ozil to leave was entirely his wish.

But reports at the time said that the Spanish giants needed the funds to start repaying the loans they took out to pay Bale’s fee.

Either way, the £42.5m transfer left Real Madrid players surprised.

“If it were up to me, he would be one of the last ones to go,” Sergio Ramos said.

Cristiano Ronaldo was reportedly furious about Ozil’s departure.

He told Portugal teammates, per AS: “The sale of Ozil is very bad news for me.

“He was the player who best knew my moves in front of goal... I'm angry about Ozil leaving.”

A video released on Twitter shows exactly why Ronaldo was upset.

The Portuguese benefit greatly from playing with Ozil. In three seasons, the German provided 27 assists for his teammate.

He really is an extraordinary player.

It wasn’t always easy for the playmaker at the Bernabeu, though.

He was hauled off at half-time by Jose Mourinho in a match against Deportivo, which prompted Ramos to wear Ozil’s number 10 shirt under his own.

Real fans were upset with Ozil’s departure, too.

They chanted ‘Don’t sell Ozil’ during Bale’s unveiling - but their pleas came too late.
