Whenever someone mentions Swedish football, your mind naturally jumps to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. The towering striker had been the face and heartbeat of the Swedish national team for years upon years but was dropped from the squad for this year’s World Cup in Russia.Having won Sweden’s footballer of the year award for ten consecutive years Zlatan was finally dethroned by Andrea Granqvist last year.Sadly, Zlatan was never really the same after injuring his knee during his time at Manchester United and, while it must have been a hard decision to leave him behind for the World Cup, it was probably the right one. Now, however, things have gotten a little bit worse for the LA Galaxy striker after Victor Lindelof was named the 2018 Swedish Player of the Year. That makes it two years in a row that Zlatan has not won the award and it is possible that he might never win it again. While he enjoyed a successful time in America, Zlatan simply can’t recreate the mercurial form he used to show week-in and week-out in Europe’s top leagues. For Lindelof however, the award would’ve come as a massive positive after what has been a forgettable start to the season. The defender has lined up in one of the worst Manchester United sides for many a year but still managed to pip Ibra to the post.To rub salt into the wound, Lindelof fired a cheeky tweet Zlatan’s way after scoring for Sweden in a friendly with Russia.

Perhaps Lindelof is suggesting that he is after Zlatan’s incredible record of 11 Player of the Year titles.

It seems like Zlatan took it all in good spirit as he was quick to reply to Lindelof's little jibe.

All the same, you can be sure Ibra won’t have enjoyed losing his throne to Granqvist last year, and Lindelof’s ascension will have only made that worse.

As hard as it might be to admit, the age of Zlatan might just be over, once and for all.
