Roberto Firmino has made a slow start to the season by his high standards.

Last season saw him flourish alongside Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah with many fans arguing he was one of European football's finest number nines.

However, Firmino has looked off the pace this campaign and has struggled to consistently deliver with just four goals in 15 appearances for Liverpool. Not only that, but his last goal came in the comfortable win over Red Star Belgrade with his drought now extending to six matches.Nevertheless, the arrival of the international break presented an opportunity for Firmino to rediscover his form and Brazil manager Tite was certainly behind him.

Brazil 1-0 Cameroon

Despite largely backing Gabriel Jesus - a forward who has equally struggled this season - the head coach showed his support for Firmino this week.

"Roberto Firmino is still a new player in the national team and so it's only fair to give him his chance to get used to that position and to create his understanding with the players around him," said Tite.

Naturally then, there was plenty of attention on the Liverpool striker when he led the line against Cameroon and reaction quickly accumulated on Twitter.

Reaction to Firmino's display

In short, supporters thought Firmino seemed off the boil after the forward missed a number of key chances and Richarlison quickly outperformed him after being subbed on.

There was frustration with Firmino's wastefulness with some even remarking that the 27-year-old looked out of shape and needed more fitness behind him.

He was duly replaced at half-time with Jesus entering the fray. Check out the pick of the tweets from the game:

Something just isn't right with Firmino.

There is little doubting that Firmino is one of the best in the business on his day, but the Liverpool man needs to raise his game in order to match his performances from last season.

Not only that, but his Cameroon showing certainly won't give Tite much reason to switch a system that Kopites have bemoaned for so long.

It seems strange that Liverpool's attack has actually been the more disappointing aspect of their 2018-19 term with the back four performing consistently.

Although Firmino, Mane and Salah certainly haven't flopped this season, they haven't been able to reach the dizzying heights of last year.

And unfortunately, Firmino has been the weakest performer of the three and could feasibly lose his place in the starting XI in games to come.

One thing's for sure, though - another Cameroon performance simply won't be good enough.
