It's hard to put your finger on Manchester United's performances this season.

One minute it seems like Jose Mourinho is going to leave the club on the back of a disappointing result, the next and supporters are hopeful that the Red Devils can turn things around.

There certainly hasn't been a positive atmosphere around Old Trafford, though, and many fans are already turning their attention to the top four as opposed to the Premier League title.

United certainly aren't showing the type of quality that suggests they could go all the way and seem to have gone backwards since their solid second place finish last year.

The club has been struggling with problems in their defence, midfield players like Nemanja Matic and Fred have proven unreliable and key members of the attack are out of form.

Man Utd's start to the season

The defeat to Manchester City was a reminder of the current gap in quality and the international break has allowed the club to take a step back and consolidate.

With fixtures against Crystal Palace, Southampton and Fulham on the horizon, United have the chance to start the winter months positively and push on to 2019.

That, of course, means the January transfer window is fast approaching and presents a big opportunity for the club to shuffle the pack after a frustrating summer.

Man Utd fans want 6 players gone

Rumours are already circling that Mourinho could improve his squad, but there are also suggestions that players could be leaving.

And although the likes of Ed Woodward will ultimately make the final decision, fans have already cast their own opinions in a vote with the Manchester Evening News.

Overall, fans wanted all the players to stay, aside from six and the voting doesn't look pretty. Take a look at the full results down below:

Players to sell

Chris Smalling - 48.8%
Alexis Sanchez - 37.6%
Antonio Valencia - 35.3%
Marcos Rojo - 19.5%
Phil Jones - 17.4%
Matteo Darmian - 7.5%

The people have spoken and it seems the supporters are pretty livid with United's defence.

Over one third of supporters who contributed to the poll wanted Sanchez out of the club in less than two months, with almost all of the fringe defenders condemned as well.

There is some positivity, however, with United fans coming together in their masses to back a number of key players. See who they want to keep down below:

Players to keep

Anthony Martial - 96.9%
Luke Shaw - 96.6%
David de Gea - 95.3%
Diogo Dalot - 95.2%
Marcus Rashford - 94.4%
Jesse Lingard - 89.8%
Victor Lindelof - 89.0%
Fred - 88.4%
Sergio Romero - 85.3%
Paul Pogba - 82.4%
Ander Herrera - 82.1%
Juan Mata - 81.7%
Andreas Pereira - 80.8%
Eric Bailly - 78.3%
Scott McTominay - 67.4%
Romelu Lukaku - 63.4%
Nemanja Matic - 63.0%
Marouane Fellaini - 60.5%
Ashley Young - 57.2%

It's very interesting to see Martial on top of the pile with the Frenchman in the midst of a brilliant run of form, and the player has always been something of a fans' favourite.

A number of players are just a few votes away from losing their support with Young, Fellaini and Matic teetering precariously on the brink.

Of course, it's unlikely that United will actually sell six of their own defenders this winter but it wouldn't be a surprise to see Rojo and Darmian walk out.

Given the start they've made to the season, though, making changes only seems logical.
