Promoter Eddie Hearn has shed light on who could possibly be Anthony Joshua’s ‘wildcard’ opponent in his next fight.

Joshua, the current WBA, IBF and WBO world heavyweight champion is already booked to fight next on April 13, 2019, at Wembley Stadium.

In the summer Hearn announced that Joshua’s next two fights would be at Wembley, with the 30-year-old first beating Alexander Povetkin at England national football stadium.

Attention has now turned to what could be next for Joshua, with rumours already suggesting WBC world champion Deontay Wilder, or former Joshua opponent Dillian Whyte could be next in line for AJ.

However, with Wilder first needing to successfully defended his title against Tyson Fury on December 1, and the same for Whyte when he rematches Dereck Chisora, Matchroom Boxing boss Hearn claimed Joshua could face a ‘wildcard’ opponent in April 2019.

Hearn on 'wildcard' opponents

Talking to Sky Sports, Hearn revealed the likes of Andre Ward and Wladimir Klitschko are potential opponents, as he looked to deflect all the attention away from just Wilder or Whyte.

Hearn said: "People talk about Andre Ward, Wladimir Klitschko, who knows what could happen?

“But you can't just limit yourself to saying 'all eggs in one basket for Deontay Wilder, or Dillian Whyte', because he's got a very tough fight against Dereck Chisora.

“Chisora and (David) Haye are thinking 'we're going to beat Dillian Whyte and fight AJ ourselves.'

"(Manager) Bernd Boente said 'It's not Wladimir Klitschko' and Wladimir said 'Hold on, don't talk for me, I'll talk for myself.' An April return, Wladimir Klitschko against Joshua, who knows?

“That would be what? Two years on from their first epic fight. One of the best heavyweight fights of all time. We'll see."

Ward is a former unified super-middleweight and light-heavyweight world champion, but retired in 2017 after beating Sergey Kovalev for the second time - the American had an unbeaten record of 32-0.

While Klitschko retired after being stopped by Joshua in round 11 of their thriller at Wembley Stadium in April 2017.
