Not everyone will ever agree on who should win the Royal Rumble each year. Given the sheer number of possibilities in play and how subjective wrestling really is, there's bound to be opinions.

In the early 2000s, the WWE was very good at picking the right man.

The Rock won in 2000 at the height of his popularity. Steve Austin won in 2001 after returning from injury. Triple H won in 2002 after returning from a long injury lay-off.

Brock Lesnar won in 2003 to cap a crazy rookie year. Chris Benoit finally rose to the top in 2004 and Batista broke out as a top solo star with the win in 2005. Hardly anyone would change those Rumbles.

Then, starting in 2013, the WWE made a series of very predictable calls. John Cena won the Rumble that year the same night The Rock defeated CM Punk for the WWE title. Everyone knew that we were heading for Rock V Cena II at WrestleMania, so no surprise there.

In 2014, Batista returned the following year after four years away and won. Roman Reigns' monster solo push culminated in a win in 2015 before Triple H won the title to set up a date with Reigns in 2016 - something the vast majority of fans knew was going to happen, too.

So, who needs to win the Rumble in 2019? Many would think that Braun Strowman is the natural favourite, but he is due to face Brock Lesnar at the event if he can beat Baron Corbin at TLC.

Who else could be in line to make history? Here are our five picks below:

Seth Rollins

This is probably the pick all the fans would want. Seth Rollins is, arguably, the best wrestler in the world right now and he's certainly as good as anyone over in Japan (including the great Kenny Omega). He's been a constant for the WWE in recent years and he seems to steal the show at every pay-per-view.

With rumours circulating that Rollins will face Lesnar at WrestleMania 35, this could finally be a realistic option. He would certainly get the biggest reaction if he was to win.

Drew McIntyre

The Scottish Psychopath is the bookies favourite to win at this point and it's easy to see why. McIntyre was said to be in line for a massive push heading into 2019 and with his victory over Kurt Angle prior to Survivor Series, the push is clearly underway

Since returning to the main roster in WWE, McIntyre is yet to suffer a pinfall loss and given the lengths Vince McMahon is going to in order to protect the former 3MB man, he has to be a favourite. He'd also be a believable choice to dethrone Brock Lesnar.

The Miz

The days when WWE fans thought The Miz wasn't very good and wasn't deserving of his standing in the company are long gone. The Hollywood A-Lister is one of the most consistently entertaining performers in the company and he's earned a new universal respect along the way.

Given that Daniel Bryan has become the WWE champion and the feeling that his story with The Miz is far from over, one would think that makes a natural WrestleMania matchup that the fans can get behind. Will Vince McMahon present Miz as a face, though?

Big E

This is a bit of a diverse shout to some, but, sooner or later, one of the New Day members has to make that leap into title contention. Big E seems the most natural fit and, more importantly, he is a believable winner of an over-the-top-rope battle royal.

With the 'New Day rule' in play, he might even give his title shot to Kofi Kingston at WrestleMania 35 and what a moment that would be for fans everywhere? Or, Big E would finally ascend up the ladder to the spot many thought he was destined for prior to New Day.

Cody Rhodes

Yes, Cody Rhodes is not in the company at present and rumours are swirling that he will start the All Elite Wrestling promotion next year that has been trademarked, but he's a free agent in 2019 and it's entirely plausible that he could return to WWE.

The American Nightmare is viewed on a different level to when he was protrying Stardust in the WWE and if he was to come in and win the Rumble to face Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania, that would truly be one of the all-time great Rumble moments.
