Avid fans of WWE from the last ten to 15 years will remember The Miz's run as a cocky heel at the top of WWE in 2011.

And his sidekick Alex Riley was as much a part of that run as anyone.

Riley started to appear on Raw by assisting the A-lister in matches, and it was during that time where Miz captured the WWE Championship, and main evented WrestleMania.

The pairing was eventually split up, with Riley's attack on Miz being well received by the WWE fans, but he would fail to materialise as a singles star, despite having a look that Vince McMahon tends to love.

After an unsuccessful stint in the ring, Riley transitioned into a color commentator, before going to NXT as a wrestler in 2015, which didn't work out either.

Rumours have surrounded the reason why Riley's push as a star stalled in 2012, many of those surround the name of John Cena.

Riley confirmed on Jim Ross' podcast last year that Cena was indeed the reason that his career went on a downwards spiral, but wouldn't reveal further details of the incident that caused it, but it's believed to have been a negative reaction from Riley after Cena tried to 'rib' him backstage.

Ryback backed Riley's claims on his own podcast, stating: “John would sit back there and bury Riley in front of everybody for no reason and Alex Riley is f****** money and he was money from day one.

“Busted his ass, had awesome theme music, worked his ass off, went out there and got a reaction from the people, but because of John Cena and I swear to God, I swear to f****** God, because of John Cena, his career is over in the WWE for no f****** reason outside of John and his personal issues. Unbelievable.”

And Riley took to Instagram yesterday to seemingly call out the 16-time world champion for no apparent reason.

On the second post that tagged Cena, Riley said: "EYE AM NOT COMING BACK @johncena EYE AM COMING FOR EVERYTHING YOU HAVE AND HOLD DEAR 2 YOU SEE ME NOW!!!!"

It's certainly random timing and considering Riley has been gone from the company for two years, you'd probably be correct in thinking this is an attention seeking ploy.

But it will be interesting to see if Cena does indeed respond, but he probably has bigger fish to be frying at this point of his career.
