We need to talk about Lionel Messi’s nutmeg on Filipe Luis in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw against Atletico Madrid on Saturday. The Argentinian pulled off an incredible piece of skill to get past the Atleti left-back, holding him off and backheeling the ball through his legs in one swift moment.Messi then ran around Luis and carried on with the ball.Football fans on Twitter were in utter disbelief at the latest moment of Messi magic.Honestly, what can’t he do with a football at his feet? But there was one thing that even Messi’s most ardent support was thinking: did he actually mean it?It was an improved piece of brilliance from Messi but did he really know what he was doing?

A new angle of the nutmeg has emerged

Fans seem to think so now after slow motion footage of the clip emerged.

Messi keeps his eyes on the ball and it definitely looks like he made a deliberate attempt to backheel it through Luis’ legs.

Football fans are now sure that Messi meant it.

So Messi may just take the title of having performed the best skill of 2018.

Poor Luis.

In an interview with Goal in 2017, the former Chelsea left-back explained his approach to stopping Messi.

“I know the best way to stop him,” Luis said. “I know he does not like playing with his back to goal, you must be right on top of him when he gets the ball.

“If he feels comfortable, you're dead.

"I feel I do pretty well against him when we play, although he always scores against us.

“And even with me being the bad guy when we meet, he never reproaches me, always shakes my hand after the game.”

Clearly, he’s going to have to find a new method.

Diego Simeone’s side were heading for the top of La Liga, leading 1-0 with minutes to go, but Ousmane Dembele scored a late equaliser.

Both clubs would be replaced at the top by Sevilla though, who beat Real Valladolid 1-0 on Sunday.
