David Moyes was up against it right from the start of his reign at Manchester United. The former Everton boss was hand-picked by Sir Alex Ferguson to undertake the unenviable task of succeeding him - but it always seemed the board weren't so sure. Moyes was allowed to make just four signings. Guillermo Varela was his first, followed by Marouane Fellaini, Saidy Janko, and Juan Mata. Lo and behold, things didn't work out for the Scot and he was fired after just 10 months. The Scot's legacy at the club is, therefore, a strange one. Many feel he was never given a fair crack of the whip, which is what Ferguson would have wanted, but equally the consensus was he just wasn't up to such a high-profile job. Of the players he bought, only Fellaini and Mata have carved out a career at the club.Mata may not start every game, but the Spanish international has scored 31 league goals for United, and some of them very important ones too. Fellaini, on the other hand, tends to divide opinion.Three successive managers have now persevered with him and Jose Mourinho obviously sees something in him. Maybe it's his physicality or his ability to make a nuisance of himself.

Moyes on 'fantastic' Fellaini

Moyes worked with the midfielder at both Everton and United and still rates him very highly, as he explained on Alan Brazil's show on talkSPORT.

"He's got fantastic chest control, like you can't believe how good his chest control is," he said.

"I would say he's the best in the world with controlling with his chest. It sticks, it's soft. He's a problem to the opposition."

When asked what the Belgian's best position is, Moyes added:

"We've seen him playing higher up, I think actually playing as one of three midfield players and one that can make the box and be a problem around the box means that he's a problem to the opposition as well.

"He's not going to be everybody's favourite but he's certainly a player that any manager, whether it be me or Jose or Louis van Gaal, have all used him in the big games."

Moyes' verdict doesn't seem to have changed the opinions of many United fans:

The good news is that Fellaini will be available to face Southampton this weekend having narrowly escaped a ban for his studs-up tackle on Luka Milivojevic in the goalless draw with Crystal Palace on Saturday.
