Liverpool's future in the Champions League hangs in the balance after a disappointing loss to Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday night.

The Reds are left needing a superb performance against Napoli on Matchday 6, after suffering defeat in all three trips to Europe this season.

In truth, it was a disappointing showing from Jurgen Klopp's men and they'll be left kicking themselves after only mustering a single shot on target all game.

An early goal from Juan Bernat ensured PSG made a strong start to the game, with Neymar eventually doubling the advantage after a brilliant exchange with Kylian Mbappe.

There was hope for Liverpool before the break, though, with James Milner scoring from the penalty spot with that aforementioned shot on target.

PSG 2-1 Liverpool

An equaliser wasn't forthcoming in the second-half and the PSG defence stood tall, with their performance sparking passionate celebrations at full-time.

Nevertheless, Liverpool fans were still left aggrieved by the result and especially in regards to the behaviour of PSG players.

Neymar was a particular source of frustration with the Brazilian living up to his stereotype of exaggerated reactions to fouls and Thiago Silva didn't cover himself in glory, either.

Carragher's passionate verdict

All this led to wide-scale criticism and few have spoken so passionately about it as Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher during his punditry duties with Viasport Fotball.

Speaking on live TV, Carragher remarked: "It was very frustrating. With Neymar, we're talking about one of the best players in the world but watching him tonight was embarrassing.

"If he continues that through his whole career, he's going to remembered for that rather than the great player he is. It leaves a sour taste in the mouth really.

"Even Thiago Silva - a centre-back and the captain - was rolling around in the corner near the end, holding his face.

"[The PSG players] should be embarrassed. I don't know how they go back and speak to the families and wives in the players lounge.

"PSG are a great team with great players, they don't need to resort to these tactics and they should let their football do the talking.

"I mean Neymar, rolling around like that, the only other time you see that is children at kindergarten."

Pretty passionate stuff from Carragher and it's easy to see why Liverpool supporters were so frustrated on the night.

From a neutral perspective as well, though, it was very disappointing to see from the PSG players who didn't need to resort to petty tactics to secure the win.

Nevertheless, the history books will always record a win from the hosts and Liverpool will need to focus ahead of a massive game with Napoli.

When Liverpool players said the main focus this season was the Premier League, they didn't envisage the threat of dropping down to the Europa League.
