The majority of mixed martial arts purists are in agreement that Conor McGregor doesn't deserve an immediate UFC lightweight championship rematch against Khabib Nurmagomedov.

The bear-grappling Dagestani picked up a one-sided dominant victory over the Irishman when they met for their eagerly-anticipated contest at UFC 229.

The Eagle kept his promise by 'smashing' the Notorious and then put the former champion out of his misery in what proved to be a tiring night when the lightweight king neck cranked his way to a submission victory.

Although the post-fight melee is what has sadly dominated the headlines ever since, a lot of fans are left wondering just what will be next for both men.

Georges St-Pierre, Floyd Mayweather Jr and even Donald Cerrone are three names that have been floating around ever since.

However, it sounds like UFC president Dana White already has a plan in place for 'ideal' fights for both stars - a mini lightweight tournament of sorts.

Speaking after The Ultimate Fighter 28 Finale - where Kamaru Usman dominated fellow welterweight contender Rafael dos Anjos - White claimed that a Dustin Poirier rematch makes for McGregor while a lightweight title match between the unbeaten Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson should also take place.

A fight that has fallen through at the last-second on several occasions.

DANA'S PLANS

According to MMA Fighting, White said: "That’s completely not true [Conor vs. Cerrone].

"I said the fight that makes sense right now is probably Poirier. And then Tony gets a shot at the title and the two winners fight each other.

"But I’m not sure exactly on a date when Conor is gonna fight yet. We have to get through this Nevada State Athletic Commission stuff first.”

Despite the convincing loss to Khabib, McGregor will remain in the title picture for now, especially since he's openly admitted that he's willing to take a fight that will eventually get him a rematch against his Russian rival if he can't directly get an immediate opportunity.

Nurmagomedov, on the other hand, is busy doing charity work while his manager, Ali Abdelaziz, has claimed that it will take $50 million from the UFC to get his client back in the Octagon.

UFC fans are desperate to see him finally meet El Cucuy to determine who truly is the most dominant lightweight on the planet, while The Diamond will look to exact revenge on McGregor after a previous loss against the Irishman - with a fight against Nate Diaz also recently falling through.
