With Manchester United suffering something of an injury crisis, Jose Mourinho had to make several changes for their trip to Southampton.Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and Chris Smalling all missed the game meaning Nemanja Matic had to operate in the centre-back role. That meant Scott McTominay was fielded as a defensive midfielder. In McTominay’s two previous starts for United, they conceded two in the first-half.And that happened once again against Southampton. The Red Devils were 2-0 down after just 20 minutes, although goals from Romelu Lukaku and Ander Herrara saw Mourinho’s side draw level before half-time.But that didn’t spare McTominay.During Manchester Evening News’ half-time player ratings, they handed him a brutal 1/10 and wrote: “Out of his depth.”And it’s an opinion that United fans completely agreed with. They were hammering him during the first-half, despite United’s comeback.

MAN UTD FANS REACT TO HIS PERFORMANCE

Check out the reaction:

Earlier in the season, Mourinho reserved some very special praise for the youngster saying that he was “special.”

"Scott McTominay is a kid with a special character, very humble, aggressive in a positive way, brave, he's a special kid,” Mourinho told Sky Sports.

"He's a special character, a special personality that a team in a negative moment needs. Do my other players have that mentality? Not all of them. Everybody is a different person.

"I can have complaints with the quality and mental approach we showed. You have to try always and that is my nature as a football professional.”

It's fair to say Mourinho and the United fans don't see eye-to-eye when it comes to McTominay.
