With the FA clamping down on major displays of passion on the touchline from managers, the subject of football's character being stripped away has been an increasing topic for discussion in the modern age.

One manager, known particularly for his animated character, is Liverpool’s Jurgen Klopp.

Last weekend against Everton, Klopp stormed the pitch to celebrate with his players after Divock Origi slotted home a 96th-minute winner.

Klopp has since apologised to Toffees boss Marco Silva for his behaviour, and even faces charges for misconduct from the FA.

However, one famous pundit believes Klopp has got off lightly - even though the severity of the punishment is yet to be determined.

Paul Merson says that if it were Jose Mourinho who ran onto the pitch, then the FA would come down on him a lot harder.

In fact, it was less than a week ago when we saw Jose make headlines for his celebrations during Manchester United's 1-0 win against Young Boys.

During Sky Sports’ The Debate, he said: "It'd be a 25-game ban - I dread to think.

"Put it this way, if that was Jose, he'd have got sent straight to the stands as soon as he got back to his technical area. Jose got sent off at Southampton for going outside his technical area.

“It's horses for courses - everyone loves Jurgen Klopp, apart from Manchester United fans. It's one of them where it's a case of 'don't do it again' - no-one got hurt and Marco Silva was fine with it."

Joining Merson on the panel was former Tottenham Hotspurs boss Tim Sherwood. Sherwood said that from a manager’s perspective, he can understand why Klopp reacted the way he did.

He added: "I can understand his emotion. I'd be still running around now, waiting for the bell for the last lap.

"Until you've stood in that technical area, you can't understand the emotion of winning a game and what it means to everyone. It's so much more than when you are a player as you're taking the heat and taking it on for the full football club.

“It's massive. When people criticise Jurgen Klopp who have never stood in the technical area, I find it difficult."

Does Merson have a point? Or is Sherwood right to side with Klopp? Let us know in the comments.
