Paul Pogba's stock seems to be fluctuating up and down with each passing week.

At times the Frenchman looks like Manchester United's most important out-field player, the next he looks like the man dragging the Red Devils down.

Against Southampton, it was certainly the latter, with the World Cup winner looking disinterested as he strolled through the 2-2 draw.

He lost the ball carelessly and was constantly caught out of position defensively, much to Jose Mourinho's frustration.

The Portuguese manager is said to have labelled Pogba a "virus" in front of the rest of the squad in the dressing room after the game.

Whether that was the best thing to do is up for debate, particularly as United clearly have a leak in their dressing room.

However, the rift between Pogba and Mourinho sadly did not end there, with yet more revelations being made courtesy of Miguel Delaney for the Independent.

Apparently, Mourinho sent a text message to United officials stating that he feels he can do no more with regards to the £89m midfielder.

Delaney wrote: "Mourinho is also now said to be at a loss as to how to deal with the French international and get the better of him, and actually texted club officials to complain that he has tried everything to no avail, from the conciliatory to the hardline."

If ever you wanted proof that the pair cannot co-exist at Old Trafford, there it is.

There have been strong rumours linking Pogba with a possible return to Juventus in the future, where he forged his reputation.

However, his United future may hinge on whether Mourinho is still in the job for the long-haul.

If the Red Devils fail to qualify for the Champions League after all the money that has been invested, Ed Woodward may have no choice but to swing the sword of Damocles.
