Danny Welbeck’s career has lurched from one debilitating injury to the next.
It really does feel like the Arsenal man has spent more time on the physio’s bench than he has on the field during his playing days.
There was hope that his unexpected move from Manchester United to Arsenal would mark the end of his injury nightmare but sadly that just hasn’t been the case.
Every time the English striker has looked like securing a consistent run in the Arsenal line-up a new injury has cropped up - wrecking any hope of fulfilling the potential he quite obviously has.
Now, the 28-year-old has suffered possibly the worst injury of them all after breaking his ankle during a Europa League clash against Sporting Lisbon at the Emirates.
The images made for sickening viewing as Welbeck fell awkwardly and his ankle bent beyond the natural.
Welbeck had to receive oxygen on the pitch before being transported straight to hospital where he remained for several days.
No timeline has been placed on a possible return or Welbeck but he is expected to miss the rest of the current season.
Now, it seems that the Gunner’s have finally run out of patience with the striker after rumours emerged from The Times that they have no intention of renewing his current contract with the London club.
According to The Times, Welbeck has been told that he will be leaving the club on a free transfer when his current contract ends in the summer of 2019.
The north London team are expected to dip into the transfer market in January as they try to fill the gap Welbeck’s absence has left in the squad.
Unai Emery’s side have a real chance of securing a top four spot but they will need to add depth to their squad in the winter window.
And, even when he does return to full fitness, club’s will unsurprisingly be hesitant to sign Welbeck so this could mark the beginning of a very difficult period for the striker.
While Arsenal’s decision may seem harsh at first glance, you can hardly blame them in the end.
You can’t help but feel sorry for him, though - poor lad.
