Liverpool kept themselves within touching distance of Premier League leaders Manchester City thanks to a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday night.
Jurgen Klopp made a host of changes from the team that beat Merseyside rivals Everton on Sunday afternoon, keen to avoid leaving some of his star players fatigued ahead of tricky fixtures against Bournemouth, Napoli and Manchester United.
However, Klopp’s gamble threatened to backfire when Jack Cork put the hosts 1-0 up early in the second half.
The Reds were far from impressive during the opening hour but, to their credit, rallied and eventually won the match 3-1.
Goals from James Milner, Roberto Firmino and Xherdan Shaqiri earned a precious victory for the Reds, who remain two points behind Pep Guardiola’s side after 15 games.
Despite the victory, Liverpool’s players have been handed some rather eyebrow-raising ratings from the Mirror.
Liverpool fans are baffled with the ratings of goalkeeper Alisson Becker and midfielder Naby Keita, in particular.
Alisson was handed an unflattering 5/10 rating, despite pulling off one of the best saves of the season just before full-time, with the Mirror simply noting about the Brazilian’s performance: “Has got to be questioned for his reaction to the goal.”
And Keita, who was arguably Man of the Match, only managed to secure a 6/10 rating from the red-top. (Watch his impressive individual highlights from the match HERE).
“Almost scored a great goal from distance in bright display,” they added on the Guinean midfielder, which begs the question: why just a six out of ten, then?
Only one Liverpool player ranked higher than a six and that was James Milner.
Liverpool fans have understandably been left wondering whether the Mirror journalist responsible for the ratings even watched the match.
Maybe he switched off the TV after Liverpool went 1-0 down?
Here are a selection of tweets from bemused supporters on social media…
Fans will always whinge about player ratings - which is often a thankless task for journalists - but they’re probably entitled to on this occasion.
