Manchester United's 2-2 draw with Arsenal wasn't quite enough to silence speculation surrounding Jose Mourinho's future.

The club are in the midst of their worst start to a Premier League campaign since 1992/93 - and that was in a 42-game season.

To make matters worse, not since 1986/17 have the Red Devils had a negative goal difference at this stage of a season.

The statistics really do make miserable reading for the Old Trafford faithful and while some are still behind their manager, they are having to contend with persistent rumours that he will be sacked.

On Friday, The Sun claimed Mauricio Pochettino is the man Ed Woodward wants to replace Mourinho at the helm, even if it would cost in the region of £40million to lure him from Tottenham.

It's a story that has done the rounds more than once this season and it's thought the Argentine has already rejected United in the past, back in 2016.

Whether United approach Spurs could yet depend on qualification for the Champions League - at the very least, if they miss out on the top four, it will become a lot cheaper to axe Mourinho due to a clause in his contract.

Pochettino has spoken many a time about his wish to lead his current club into their new stadium and he often emphasises his "loyalty" whenever he is asked about his future.

As for what lies in store for his United counterpart, however, his agent Jorge Mendes has taken the unusual step of releasing a statement to address the latest talk of his departure.

Mendes has responded

“There have been more rumours of Jose Mourinho leaving Manchester United," Mendes said, per the Telegraph.

"It’s totally untrue. José is very happy at the club and the club is very happy with him.

"He has a long-term contract with Manchester United and is fully committed to the club in building a solid winning project.”

These days, Mendes is fully occupied by working with Wolves, but he also represents a number of high-profile clients including Cristiano Ronaldo, Romelu Lukaku, and Mourinho.

The super-agent is often heard talking up moves for the players he works with, but he rarely feels the need to talk about a manager in this way.

Realistically, the only thing that is going to end speculation surrounding Mourinho once and for all is results on the pitch.
