Former Red Bull four time world champion, and current Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel has paid an emotional tribute to the legendary German and former Ferrari driver Michael Schumacher.

Schumacher is widely regarded as one of the best drivers ever to race in sport, ending his career in 2012 with the records for both most wins (91), and most world titles (7).

Shortly after retiring, however, the iconic German driver suffered life-changing injuries in December 2013, whilst on a family skiing holiday in the French Alps.

Despite beating initial fears that the injuries could cost him his life, Schumacher is still said to need constant care, with his family publicly stating that they wish for his recovery to remain a private issue.

Schumacher remains one of the biggest names in Formula 1 and four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel has spoken of the influence the legendary driver had on his own career.

"He was my hero," Vettel told F1 Racing's magazine, per The Mirror. "I used to have posters on the wall of him. I met Michael for the first time when I was seven. Then, later, I got to know him as a person, and he was always there for me, with a word of advice or help.

"For me, he is the best driver we have ever had in terms of talent, skills, passion and willpower. He will be remembered as the best driver in history.

"I think he was uncontested both in terms of talent and his attitude to sport - the devotion, the work, the will, always to give more than anyone else."

Vettel also went on to wish his former friend and hero a message of support, as Schumacher continues with his recovery.

"Of course I wish him the very best and hope that he will continue to fight the battle and come back some time.

"I miss his opinion, his advice, his expertise."
