Romelu Lukaku finally ended his Old Trafford drought on Saturday afternoon.

After failing to hit the back of the net on Manchester United's home turf since March, the big Belgian striker netted the Red Devils' third goal in the 4-1 rout against Fulham.

It was a much-needed win for Jose Mourinho's side, who were without a win in four games previous.

For Lukaku, it was perhaps the most important goal of his career so far after months of heavy criticism.

He initially hit the ground running following his £75m move from Everton, but 2018/19 has been anything but kind to him.

The likes of Paul Scholes have debated what he actually brings to United if he isn't hitting the back of the net on a regular basis.

However, one former United man that has leapt to the defence of Lukaku is Dimitar Berbatov.

The former Bulgarian striker has praised him highly and suggested his teammates need to adapt to his flaws - most notably his first-touch.

"Why do people concentrate on this [goalscoring drought]?" Berbatov said, per Sky Sports. "Strikers are more than just goals now.

"How is that going to help Lukaku when there are constantly people saying how long he didn't score a goal for.

"It is important and I am sure he had that relief 'it is finally over'. People always talking about him not scoring is just spreading negativity.

"He knows all the this. He is probably going home and saying to himself 'I cannot believe I didn't score again, people are going to be on my back.' How is that going to affect his self-confidence? It is low.

"People think he does not want to score, but that is wrong of course.

"I like him a lot, because he is good on the ball, he is powerful, but he needs team-mates around him who understand his quality, and know how to pass him the ball.

"If Lukaku is not as good as others with his first touch, then give him a ball that he can handle."

He may have a point, but it's hard to be a striker at the very top with the obvious flaws that Lukaku possesses right now.

Football is far too fast-paced now and a good first-touch is needed all over the pitch, particularly to make the ball stick up front.
