Liverpool fans are presumably on cloud nine following Tuesday night’s hard-fought victory over Napoli at Anfield. It was a result which ensures the Reds will be in the hat for the Champions League knockout stage draw.Mohamed Salah’s goal was enough to secure second place in Group C for Jurgen Klopp’s side, who were also indebted to the contribution of goalkeeper Alisson. The Brazilian shot-stopper, who joined the Reds from AS Roma in the summer, produced a fabulous last-minute save from Arkadiusz Milik from point-blank range to keep his team’s clean sheet in check.Without that last-gasp stop, Liverpool would now be out of the Champions League. But should the Merseyside outfit have been reduced to 10 men early in the match?Virgil van Dijk may have won the ball but he also caught the leg of Dries Mertens, who was lucky to avoid a serious injury.Referee Damir Skomina showed the talismanic Dutchman a yellow card, but many football fans on social media believe the former Southampton star should have seen red.It goes without saying that most - if not all - Liverpool fans were firmly on Van Dijk’s side and felt that, if anything, a yellow card was harsh. This prompted a tweet from a Manchester United supporter, which has gone viral. The tweet compares the same Liverpool fan's reaction to Sergio Ramos’s infamous challenge on Salah during last season’s Champions League final to Van Dijk’s tackle on Mertens.Check it out…

In fairness, this just about sums up every set of partisan supporters, not just Liverpool fans.

Still, it’s pretty funny - and has spread across social media like wildfire as a result, receiving over 5,000 retweets and 9,000 ‘likes’ in less than four hours after being posted.

Liverpool fans are convinced it was a fair challenge; however, as football writer Tom Williams pointed out on Twitter following the incident, ‘he got the ball’ is not always a valid excuse.

Look at the replays of Van Dijk’s tackle and it’s no exaggeration to suggest that Mertens could easily have sustained a terrible injury.

Fortunately he was fine, but the yellow card to Van Dijk was still more than justified.
