Following their 4-1 victory over Fulham last weekend, Jose Mourinho would have been hoping his side were starting to gain confidence after a poor start to the season.

However, whatever confidence they would have gained from that victory has surely now disappeared after their visit to Valencia for their final Champions League group stage game.

Qualification was already secured but there was still a chance for the Red Devils to top the group.

But they didn’t even get a sniff of doing that.

Mourinho made eight changes to his side ahead of the visit to Liverpool on Sunday.

That gave £52 million summer signing Fred an opportunity to impress from the start.

But he really didn’t take his opportunity during United’s 2-1 loss.

Fred was nothing short of terrible during his 57 minutes on the pitch before he was eventually substituted by Marcus Rashford.

Just check out the reaction from Man Utd fans. They thought Fred was so bad that they don't think they will be seeing Fred play again under Mourinho:

Now that’s pretty worrying.

The Brazilian midfielder has had to make do with a place on United’s bench for the majority of the season and Mourinho recently claimed it’s because the defence isn’t good enough.

"Step by step. You have also other players in other clubs that needed their time and you have some of them that played even less than what Fred is playing," Mourinho said, per the Telegraph.

“I think [with] Fred, when the team is defensively stronger and doesn’t need in midfield people that is more worried in giving some balance to the team than being involved in creation and attacking dynamics, the day we are stronger defensively, I think the horizons for Fred change completely.”
