Manchester United may have qualified for the Champions League last-16 but their European campaign has been far from convincing to date.
The Red Devils progressed as runners-up from Group H with 10 points from their six group matches, winning just three matches - two of those wins coming against Young Boys.
As it turned out, a victory against Valencia in their final group game would have seen them top the group thanks to Juventus’ shock defeat to Young Boys.
But Jose Mourinho’s side lost 2-1 at the Mestalla after a really disappointing display.
Carlos Soler gave the home side the lead with a superb driven strike after just 17 minutes.
Then, two minutes after half-time, the game was effectively over thanks to Phil Jones.
Under pressure from Valencia striker Michy Batshuayi, Jones attempted to roll the ball back to goalkeeper Sergio Romero.
However, Jones hadn’t seen Romero coming out and passed the ball straight past him and into his own net.
Marcus Rashford did pull a goal back for United with a few minutes remaining but it was too little, too late.
It was a disappointing all-around performance from United but the night got even worse for Jones after the game.
On Twitter, Batshuayi decided to embarrass Jones even further by pointing out that he had pulled yet another bizarre facial expression.
After his Batman boots had been pointed out by Bleacher Report, Batshuayi replied: Glad you like guys... but can we talk about Phil Jones face first? #anotherone”
And it didn’t stop there.
Manchester Evening News decided to stick their boot in during their player ratings, giving him a 3/10 and writing: “Despaired at the haphazard defending around him but gifted Soler the ball to beat Romero on 17 minutes and then scored the fourth own goal of his United career. 3.”
