Manchester United probably produced their best performance of the season last weekend when they beat Fulham 4-1 at Old Trafford. However, to follow that up with one of the worst performances of the season against Valencia on Wednesday night must have been bitterly disappointing for Jose Mourinho and United fans.In fairness, the Red Devils had already qualified and made eight changes from that victory against Fulham ahead of their clash against Liverpool on Sunday. But that’s no excuse for the performance of a side that included Paul Pogba, £52 million summer signing Fred and Romelu Lukaku.Valencia ran out 2-1 winners meaning United couldn’t capitalise on Juventus’ loss to Young Boys by the same scoreline. It meant Mourinho’s side finished as runners-up meaning they now face either Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Borussia Dortmund or Porto in the last-16.But it wasn’t just the performance of the players that annoyed fans.Instead, the attitude of club captain Antonio Valencia also upset supporters.Samuel Luckhurst, chief Manchester United writer for the Manchester Evening News, explained how Valencia had to be “told to applaud” United fans that had travelled to Spain after the match.

It may seem a small, honest mistake from the right-back but it’s something that supporters simply couldn't accept from their captain.

Despite the poor performance, Mourinho admitted that he “didn’t learn anything” from his the match at the Mestalla.

"I didn't learn anything at all," Mourinho said, per Sky Sports. "Nothing surprised me at all."

"I think to qualify in this group is a success, never a failure. To finish second in this group is always a success.

"Before the game, I told the players if we win and Juve win, we did our job. If we don't win and Juve don't win we can blame ourselves.

"Apart from a couple of clubs that are clearly much better than the others, I don't think the draw will be significantly different.

"There are teams that finish second that the ones that finish first will not be happy to play against."
