Manchester United fan creates Phil Jones video after his latest own goal v Valencia

Sir Alex Ferguson got most things right during his illustrious managerial career, but a prediction he made about Phil Jones in April 2013 looks more ridiculous with each passing year.

Following his final Premier League title triumph with the Red Devils, Fergie said of Jones: “Arguably, the way he is looking, he could be our best ever player."

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, of course, but fast-forward almost six years and that comment now looks utterly baffling.

Jones, whose career has been blighted by a succession of untimely injuries, has sadly become a figure of fun among most football fans since Ferguson’s retirement.

He’s more famous for the silly faces he inadvertently pulls during matches rather than his defensive qualities.

He’s also famed for his penchant for a high-profile error, as we saw on Wednesday night at the Mestalla.

Jones put Valencia 2-0 up with a comical own goal past Sergio Romero.

After the match, which United lost 2-1, one fan uploaded a funny compilation video of Jones’s best own goals for the Red Devils.

It’s pure gold - and you can watch it here…

United fans are so impressed that they reckon Jose Mourinho should stick him upfront…

In fairness, old Jonesy would probably be more of a threat than Romelu Lukaku at the moment.

Joking aside, though, it’s a minor miracle that Jones is still a Man Utd player.

In another two years’ time, he’ll be eligible for a testimonial at Old Trafford.

Although he’s won a Premier League winners’ medal for United, it could be argued that he’s not good enough to be playing for one of the world’s biggest football clubs.

Would he get into Man City’s squad? No. Liverpool’s? Nope. Barcelona’s? Don’t be silly.

But United, for one reason or another, can’t bring themselves to offload him.

Sadly, and surely to Ferguson’s immense disappointment, Jones probably wouldn’t even make United’s list of their 200 greatest players.
