Chelsea had already secured top spot in their Europa League group before Thursday’s clash with Vidi, yet they didn’t skimp on providing entertainment in Budapest.
The Blues took the lead after half-an-hour via a sublime Willian free-kick only for it to be cancelled by Ethan Ampadu’s own-goal two minutes later.
The visitors then found themselves trailing early in the second half when Loic Nego volleyed in at the back post, but Olivier Giroud curled in another dead ball to restore parity in the 75th minute.
Maurizio Sarri picked a less than full-strength squad for the trip to Budapest including a pair of academy players in Jamie Cumming and George McEachran.
Naturally, though, the Italian wasn’t best pleased to come away from the Hungarian capital with a 2-2 draw.
“We made a lot of mistakes from the tactical point of view. I am very happy with the character and with the reaction from the second goal,” he said, per BBC Sport.
“On the pitch there was a lot of young players so it wasn't easy to react.
“From the tactical point of view we made a lot of mistakes. We lost a lot of ball. We can manage the ball better I think. At the end, especially with the young players I am satisfied with the character.”
Considering Chelsea ended the match with 76 per cent of the possession and 18 shots, there’s no question they could’ve been more ruthless in front of goal.
However, it wasn’t a forgettable night for the entire squad.
Covering for the absence of Cesar Azpilicueta and Gary Cahill, Cesc Fabregas captained the Blues for the first time in his five years at Stamford Bridge.
While it wasn’t the most glamorous of occasions to don the armband, it’s no less of an occasion worth celebrating.

Chelsea got in on the act, too, and their Instagram post promoted a reply from none other than John Terry.
The 38-year-old - who skippered the west London club for most of his 700 appearances in blue - congratulated Fabregas, but not without making a joke about the size of his arms.
He wrote: “That armband might be a bit big for them arms after spending so long on [mine]. Congratulations mate.”
Terry still has a very strong connection with Chelsea and fans will appreciate seeing him stay in touch with his former colleagues.
What they would adore even more, though, is to see the Aston Villa assistant coach barking orders from the touchline at Stamford Bridge someday.
