Manchester United could drop as low as eighth in the Premier League table if they lose to Liverpool on Sunday afternoon.

The Red Devils boast a respectable record at Anfield in recent years, winning two of their five most recent trips to Merseyside in all competitions.

While Jose Mourinho can’t claim the credit for those victories on the road, he did get the better of Jurgen Klopp in their fourth meeting in charge of their current clubs.

Liverpool and United had previously played out three draws under their management, so it’s difficult to predict what awaits fans this weekend.

Both Mourinho and Klopp will be desperate for three points, albeit amid contrasting circumstances.

The hosts currently lead the Premier League by a single point - 16 clear of their Manchester rivals in sixth.

When asked if the £150 million Liverpool invested in signings last season could underpin their advantage over his side, Mourinho offered a typically cryptic response.

“It's not just about spending money and reinforcing the squad, a football team is more than that,” he said, per BBC Sport.

“It's like a house. It's not just about buying the furniture, you have to do work, you spend money on the best possible furniture and then you're ready to live in an amazing house.”

It’s an interesting take given Mourinho has made well over £400 million worth of purchases since taking the job at Old Trafford.

Despite his enormous expenditure, though, the Portuguese boss is expecting another marquee acquisition come January if not the summer.

His desire to bring in a top centre-back has been well-documented during recent months, with several high-profile names mooted as possible targets.

Tottenham’s Toby Alderweireld - who’s long been linked with a switch to United - could be available for as little as £25.4 million at the end of the season, according to the Evening Standard.

Transfer rumours are one thing, but a player engaging with related content is another - that’s what makes Alderweireld’s Twitter activity on Friday so intriguing.

The Belgian ‘liked’ a tweet from a Red Devils fan listing him as one of the players the club should sign.

Take a look…

Surely Alderweireld knew doing something so blatant would draw attention.

There’s no question Mourinho is interested in the Spurs defender’s availability, so time will tell if this proves to be the first sign of his intentions for the upcoming transfer window.
