The Premier League table doesn’t lie and it’s clear that a huge gulf in class currently exists between Liverpool and Manchester United.Liverpool are currently top of the Premier League table, unbeaten after their opening 16 games, and already 16 points ahead of their fierce Mancunian rivals.United, meanwhile, head into Sunday’s match at Anfield down in sixth place, having won just seven of their opening 16 matches.Liverpool are expected to beat United this weekend. It wouldn’t be a shock of Jose Mourinho’s men suffer their heaviest defeat of the season so far against the Reds.Barring an unexpectedly impressive performance, inconsistent United’s top-four hopes will almost certainly suffer another blow at Anfield.Mourinho will need to produce one of his famed ‘masterclasses’ to ensure United avoid defeat against the league-leaders.However, if Liverpool’s players and coaching staff required extra incentive to win this fixture then Mourinho may have just provided it.Speaking in an interview with Soccer AM, the Portuguese tactician was asked whether this current Liverpool team will be the best he’s ever faced. His response was cutting.“Well, I played a Liverpool that were European champions,” Mourinho began.Soccer AM’s Tubes then asked: “Is this team better, though?”“I don’t know if this team is better,” Mourinho added.

“I know that one was European champions and this one won nothing.”

Burn.

Needless to say, Mourinho’s comments have split United and Liverpool fans down the middle.

While United fans love Mourinho for ‘speaking the truth’ about the Reds…

Liverpool fans were less impressed…

But does Mourinho actually have a point?

Rightly or wrong, football teams are ultimately judged by the trophies they win.

This current Liverpool team came agonisingly close to winning last season’s Champions League final, but they fell short.

And while they’re currently flying high in the Premier League table, there’s still an awfully long way to go before the season finishes.

As Liverpool fans discovered back in 2014, when they faced Mourinho’s Chelsea, the situation can go from heavenly to heartbreaking in the space of one afternoon.

Is this the best Liverpool team of the Premier League era? Have your say below.
