Chelsea had the opportunity to build on their win over Manchester City this weekend.

Having suffered disappointing results against Tottenham and Wolves, they caused a shock at Stamford Bridge by becoming the first team to defeat the champions this season.

The opponents in front of them proved Brighton & Hove Albion, who have been enjoying a solid second season in the Premier League and have proven tough to defeat at home.

Tottenham struggled to get a result on the south coast and Manchester United were memorably defeated 3-2 on the second week of the campaign.

However, Chelsea started in the kind of form that their predecessors couldn't produce and the type of football that saw them win 4-0 at the Amex Stadium last year.

Brighton vs Chelsea

Pedro opened the scoring early on, tapping home from close range after latching on to Eden Hazard's ball across the box.

Hazard then delivered a superb goal of his own, racing through on goal before brilliantly finishing one-on-oen with Mathew Ryan.

Amongst all the drama, however, Chelsea fans were keeping an eye on one of their quieter performers with Mateo Kovacic being selected in the midfield.

Reaction to Kovacic's display

The Real Madrid loanee has been competing with Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek this season, freshly returning from injury to earn himself a start.

And, to be perfectly honest, Chelsea fans simply weren't impressed by his display and made an array of criticisms on Twitter.

Aside from being slammed across the board, many supporters were frustrated with misplaced passes, others thought he was playing too negatively and some thought he offered nothing going forward.

Take a look at the pick of the tweets below:

It seems Chelsea fans are starting to grow frustrated with Kovacic.

There have always been worries about his ability offensively and with his two competitors finding the net, the pressure is beginning to mount.

And the attributes that usually earn him praise at Chelsea weren't up to scratch either, with Kovacic causing plenty of problems with wayward passes.

He accidentally created an opportunity for Solly March - who scored later in the game - during the first-half and proceeded to blame his teammates shortly afterwards.

There have been impressive performances from Kovacic this season, but he simply hasn't matched his colleagues recently and some reckon he's still recovering from the injury.

No matter where you stand on the debate, though, his trip was Brighton was a day to forget.
