It took 120 days and 22 games, but Arsenal's unbeaten run is finally over. The Gunners twice fought their way back into the game at St Mary's but ultimately succumbed 3-2 to a revived Southampton side under new leadership in Ralph Hasenhuttl. With five minutes of normal time remaining, Shane Long chipped the ball onto the head of Charlie Austin past a wildly-flapping Bernd Leno. On balance, the hosts deserved the three points and while things may have been different had Arsenal had a fully-fit defence to choose from, a back three of Laurent Koscielny, Granit Xhaka, and Stephan Lichtsteiner endured a torrid afternoon. In fact, this is the first time in seven years that the north Londoners have conceded so many goals - 23 in all - at this stage of the season. There are still big problems in defence and Unai Emery evidently needs more time to fix them. However, it was substitute Mesut Ozil who gave the ball away cheaply leading to the third Southampton goal and unsurprisingly, Arsenal fans weren't happy. The former Germany international came on for Alex Iwobi with 20 minutes remaining. At that point, the scores were level and it was easy to see Emery's thinking - bring on one of Arsenal's most experienced attacking players and swing the game in their favour.

Ozil's impact was questioned

Unfortunately, that is far from how the game transpired and following his costly mistake, plenty of fans on social media felt Ozil was to blame for thwarting their intent going forward and not fighting hard enough to keep the ball at the other end:

Arsenal must now regroup quickly before their second north London derby in a matter of weeks in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday.

They would have gone into that encounter full of confidence, but there were shades of the late-Arsene Wenger days about them on the south coast.

If he is picked in midweek, Ozil will need a big performance to win some of his critics over.

The playmaker has contributed just four goals and two assists in all competitions this season and has had to contend with accusations his back injury was sparked by him playing too many video games.

Of course, he can't shoulder too much of the blame for Sunday's defeat given that he was restricted to such a short amount of time on the pitch, but a player of his ability really should be changing games - and Ozil simply isn't doing that this season.
