When Liverpool signed Xherdan Shaqiri for just £13.5 million, not everyone was convinced. One man that certainly wasn’t convinced was Gary Neville."I'm not a fan of Shaqiri to be honest with you," Neville said on ITV when Liverpool were linked to him. "I think that was, to be fair, worse by the fact that he distanced himself from his team-mates as Stoke."They were unprofessional last season, Stoke. There's no doubt, and he epitomised it."He could score the goal of the tournament and he could have the most amazing game.

"But he could also be there for three matches, do nothing and just amble and wobble around. To be honest with you, with him, players like that I can't have. I struggle with it."

But since arriving at Anfield, Shaqiri has looked brilliant and he was the hero when Manchester United visited Anfield.

Liverpool had dominated Jose Mourinho’s side but the scores were locked at 1-1 with 20 minutes remaining.

Ten minutes later, it was 3-1 to Liverpool and Shaqiri had scored two deflected goals.

In fact, his 20-minute cameo was enough to earn him the Man of the Match award.

Jamie Carragher handed it to Shaqiri after the match on Sky Sports and joked that “Gary Neville was supposed to give it to you but he didn’t want to face you…”

Shaqiri’s reaction?

“Tell him I said hello.”

Brilliant.

The 27-year-old has certainly done his talking on the pitch but, earlier this season, Shaqiri insisted he “didn’t care” what Neville had to say about him.

“I do not care what he [Neville] says,” Shaqiri said in an interview with Swiss German-language publication Blick, per the Independent. “I do not care if he says now that I'm playing hard.

“Many have ridiculed after the transfer that Liverpool is too big for me. But I was always calm, too, when I got little playing time at the beginning.

“I knew, of course, because of the experience at Bayern and Inter, that I have to be patient, work focused and then take my chance when I get it.”

He certainly took his chance against United…
