It's no secret anymore that Monday Night Raw's ratings have become the lowest-ever in its 25-year history in recent weeks.

Booking that lacks imagination, rematch after rematch and the loss of top stars has all contributed to the unwanted records, which isn't a good look on the company as a whole.

And with SmackDown's big-money move to FOX Sports in October 2019 on the horizon, viewing figures and ratings will be focused on more than ever.

So when an announcement was made via WWE's official Twitter account that Vince McMahon would return to Raw following the Tables, Ladders and Chairs pay-per-view, rumours began to swirl.

Vince wouldn't be coming back if it wasn't for something big, and the fact that WWE haven't stated any reasoning for his appearance makes it even stranger.

Some are convinced that it may have something to do with McMahon's venture back into American Football - he is restarting the XFL league for a start date of February 2020.

That means he could potentially step aside from his day-to-day running of WWE and creative control and hand it over to Triple H, who would be a welcome replacement after the job he has done with NXT.

However Forbes have speculated that there may be a mid-season Superstar Shake-up, which has usually been reserved for the week after WrestleMania in recent years.

A shake-up normally garners better ratings than the average figure, so it would make a modicum of sense to deploy this tactic despite being on the way to WrestleMania season, and the way WWE titled McMahon's return hints at such a move.

And when you think about it, it could be a great way to get Charlotte Flair on Raw to feud with Ronda Rousey, and Nia Jax to the blue brand to face Becky Lynch, all who have rivalries heating up with each other but are on opposite brands.

And it could spark some well-needed call-ups from NXT, with the likes of Undisputed Era and Velveteen Dream being most likely to get the nod if it happens.

Whatever the plan will be, Raw really does seem must-see for the first time in a while tonight.
